School visits

A school visit to the Egyptian mummies gallery at the British Museum

Booking your visit

Visits to the Museum are free but you must book for any group of 10 or more. Booking enables us to provide schools with a range of facilities and services to make your visit beneficial and enjoyable.

Since some galleries – especially the Greek and Egyptian – are very popular, we advise you book at least one term before you plan to visit and not to make any travel arrangements until you have a confirmed booking.

  • numbers of students and adults
  • which galleries you want to visit
  • particular access or special requirements of your group

When you have booked, you will be sent confirmation and further advice about organising your visit. If you do not receive a confirmation form within two weeks of booking, please contact us immediately.

Planning your visit

See our Schools and teachers section details of events, resource packs, information sheets and activity ideas.

We recommend that you visit before you bring your group, this will allow you to plan your visit and prepare your risk assessment.

You can also attend a free planning session, when members of the schools team will be on hand to show you relevant galleries, suggest ways of structuring your visit and advise you on suitable learning activities for your pupils. Planning sessions take place once a term.

Forthcoming dates are:
Thursday 30 April 2009, 16.00–17.30

Please book via the Ticket Desk on +44 (020) 7323 8181

Most of the galleries used by schools are open 10.00–17.30, but please check when you book. Occasionally the galleries have to close at short notice.
