Tour groups of 10 people or more are now required to book before visiting the Museum.

Groups must also use the King Edward entrance on Montague Place (North Entrance), postcode WC1E 7JW.

Group bookings

Tour groups of 10 people or more must now book their visit at least seven days in advance. Groups without an advance booking may be denied immediate entry.*

For group entry to exhibitions, see oppositebelow. A separate booking to enter the Museum is not required.

*This new policy is due to the significant increase in tour group visitors to the Museum and is intended to make the visitor experience more pleasant for all visitors. We would like to thank you in advance for your help and support with these changes.

Getting here

Groups must now enter the Museum via the King Edward entrance on Montague Place, WC1E 7JW.

This entrance provides more space for groups, as well as dedicated coach parking.

Public transport

The Museum is easily accessible by public transport. More on how to get here

Coach parking

Coach parties are advised to use the metered parking at Montague Place.

Disabled parking

Parking spaces may be booked for minibuses for people with mobility impairments. Please phone +44 (0)20 7323 8299 at least 24 hours in advance. You will be asked for the registration number, make and model of vehicle.

Access provision for groups can include:

  • Accompanied visits with a Museum volunteer
  • Tailored handling sessions around a group-specific interest area for learning disabled
  • Tailored sign interpreted talks addressing group-specific interest areas of the collection



Frequently asked questions

  • 1. What size of group does advanced booking apply to?

    All groups of 10 or more people should book in advance before visiting the Museum. Please note that there is a different process for school visits. Groups with special access requirements should see the Access provision section above.

  • 2. Will a fee be charged for group bookings?

    Groups can book free of charge via the British Museum shop online.

  • 3. Can we book without seven days’ notice?

    We encourage booking seven days in advance as this assists us with planning, but you will still be able to book up until the evening before your visit.

  • 4. How important is it to keep to the entry time?

    We want all groups to choose a timeslot as close as possible to when they wish to arrive so we can get an idea of peak times and numbers, which will assist us with both entry control and planning. However, we are aware that unforeseen circumstances – e.g. bad traffic – can affect your plans, so aim to be flexible where possible. If you arrive later than planned, please let the staff member at the entrance know what time you were booked for.

  • 5. If numbers change after a booking is made, can the booking be amended?

    If there are a few extra (or fewer) people in the group, there is no need to amend the booking; just let the staff member know on arrival. If the group will be significantly larger (i.e. 20-30 extra people), please make a second booking in the same timeslot for the additional number of people.

  • 6. How can we make a cancellation of our booking?

  • 7. How long can we stay once inside?

    The time on your booking is your arrival time only. Once inside, there is no limit to the time you can spend in the Museum, subject to our usual opening and closing times.

  • 8. Are there any areas where guiding is not allowed?

    Due to a lack of space and high visitor numbers, we do not allow guiding in Rooms 62–63 (Egyptian death and afterlife: mummies). Otherwise, please be mindful of the needs of other visitors and try not to block exits or access routes when guiding through the Museum.

  • 9. Will we be turned away if we do not have a booking?

    Please try to book seven days in advance to ensure that your visit runs as smoothly as possible. Currently, groups that have not booked will not be turned away, but you may find that your visit is delayed, or that you are not able to enter immediately.

  • 10. What happens if we have visitors with specific access requirements in our group?

    The King Edward Entrance on Montague Place is accessible to all visitors. Groups arriving at the main gates will be asked to walk round to the King Edward entrance. However, exceptions may be made for members of the group who are unable to make this walk.

  • 11. Once we have checked in at the North Entrance can we exit and re-enter through 
    the front gates?

    A group arriving at the front gates that has already checked in at the Museum will still be asked to use the King Edward Entrance on Montague Place to re-enter the Museum.

    There is a separate booking process for school groups – see the School visits page. School groups are not currently required to use the King Edward entrance, although they may do so if it is more convenient.
