What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

The main cloakroom is to the west of the Main entrance. £1.50 per item, 50 pence for umbrellas, fold-up pushchairs free.

Maximum size: 40x40x50cm
Maximum weight: 8kg (except fold-up pushchairs). Please note folding bicycles are not accepted in the cloakrooms.

Please note that when maximum cloakroom capacity is reached the Museum cannot accept any more items.

There is a Members' cloakroom at the Museum's Montague Place entrance. Free for Members only. Please note the main cloakroom will be a charging service only.

Items larger than 40x40x50cm are not allowed on the British Museum premises for safety and security reasons. Wheeled cases must be carried or left in the cloakrooms. Folding bicycles are not accepted in the cloakrooms.

Special exhibitions may have additional restrictions.

The Museum reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to vary or alter these conditions without prior notice.

There are toilets on every floor.

Accessible toilets are in the Great Court, the Ford Centre for Young Visitors, the Clore Education Centre and to the north of Room 66.

Photography with flash and video recording is permitted in most galleries for private purposes only, using hand-held equipment. Tripods and monopods are not permitted in any part of the Museum.
