What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Dine under the magnificent roof of the Great Court.

The Great Court Restaurant is a refined dining experience with a casual feel. The open kitchen shows a glimpse of the chefs at work and we serve fresh seasonal mains, afternoon tea, and an exclusive exhibition-inspired menu (see offers below).

About the Great Court Restaurant

Freshly made sandwiches, snacks, salads and cakes in the Great Court.

The Court Café is great for grabbing a quick bite to eat or a coffee during your Museum visit.

There is plenty of seating at the long sharing tables and high chairs are available.

The Court Café is in the north-east corner of the Great Court

Gallery Café

Gallery Café

A family-friendly café where kids eat free*.

The Gallery Café serves a range of freshly prepared hot dishes as well as sandwiches, soups and salads. It’s a great spot for family meals away from the hustle and bustle of the Museum. High chairs are available.

*One free child’s meal when you buy an adult main meal. Valid for children under 12 only.

The Gallery Café is on the Ground floor, through Room 12
