The Caribbean before Columbus:
Taíno Icons in the British Museum
3 May – 17 June 2007
Room 3
Exhibition closed
Part of Atlantic Trade and Identity season
This exhibition introduces a selection of rare objects sculpted
in wood by Taíno artisans.
Taíno people were the original inhabitants of much of the
Caribbean. Taíno culture (AD 1000–1520) predates the voyages of
Columbus by several hundred years.
The Caribbean before Columbus: Taíno Icons in the British
Museum offers a glimpse into a vibrant society that was nearly
completely eclipsed by European contact and its aftermath.
