The art of peace: Paintings by the poet Tagore

14 September – 12 November 2006
Room 3
Exhibition closed
Part of the Voices of Bengal season
Paintings form the focus of this introduction to the Bengali
poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941). The first Asian writer to be
awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, Tagore is best known today
as a writer, poet and composer, especially in the Indian
subcontinent. It is less well known that he was also a painter of
considerable individuality. The paintings in this display are from
the collections of the British Museum and have never previously
been shown.
