Becoming a Trustee
Trustees of the British Museum are from a
range of backgrounds and expertise reflecting the breadth and
complexity of the Museum’s work. The British Museum endorses the
Department for Culture, Media and Sports’ statement on promoting an
equal opportunities policy.
Appointments are made on merit, following a
fair and transparent process, which is regulated by the
Office of the Commissioner for
Public Appointments (OCPA). Applications are welcomed
regardless of gender, age, marital status, disability, religion,
ethnic origin, political opinion, sexual orientation, for whether
or not you have dependents.
Vacancies are advertised from time to time on
the British Museum website, on the Department for Culture, Media
and Sports’ website, and in the national media.
Applicants are required to complete an
application form, which will be assessed against advertised
criteria. Those who best fit the criteria will be invited to attend
a panel interview, comprising members of the Board and an
independent member appointed by OCPA . The panel will normally
recommend at least two candidates for each vacancy to the Prime
Minister. The final decision on appointment rests with the Prime
Minister.
Initial appointments are usually for a term of
four years. Appointments can be renewed with the Prime Minister’s
approval. The total term served as a Trustee cannot exceed 10
years.
