Marei is originally from Berlin and studied
Textile Science and Technology at the Universities in Berlin and Manchester. She
received her Ph.D. in 2006 from the University of Manchester for
research conducted within a large European project on the
Monitoring of Damage in Historic Tapestries.
Before joining the Department of Conservation
and Scientific Research at the British Museum in March 2007 she
spent six months as a fellow at the Smithsonian Museum Conservation
Institute researching weighted silks and portable XRF for the
identification of metal mordants in textiles.
