Treasure
The Department of Prehistory and Europe has a responsibility to
process prehistoric, Roman, medieval and early modern objects -
except for coins - under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996. Any
object found in England or Wales containing at least 10% gold or
silver, and at least 300 years old when found, qualifies as
potential Treasure and must be reported to the local coroner by the
finder.
Processing Treasure finds is a major part of the department's
role in the Museum. The Department of Coins and Medals and the
Department of Conservation, Science & Documentation are also
involved in implementing the Treasure Act.
