With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the
Department of Conservation and Scientific Research has
appointed the first of two Mellon Fellows in Conservation Science,
and Dr Satoko Tanimoto took up this three-year fellowship at the
beginning of March 2007.
Satoko has recently completed a PhD entitled ‘Experimental Study
of Late Bronze Age Glass-Making Practice’ at the Institute of
Archaeology, UCL. During her PhD, Satoko also spent several
extended periods working in the Science Section at the Victoria and
Albert Museum and worked as a tutor in the Conservation Department
at the City and Guilds Art School.
Satoko has a first degree from the Kobe Pharmaceutical
University (Chemistry and Pharmacy/Pharmacology) in Japan and a MSc
in Environmental Sciences and Management from the University of San
Francisco, where she studied volatile leaf oils by gas
chromatography-mass spectrometry. Satoko also spent a year as an
intern at the Getty Conservation Institute, where she worked with
David Scott on a number of projects, using a range of analytical
techniques, including the study of ancient Egyptian
cartonnages.
Satoko has recently returned from India (Ahhichatragarh
Fort/Nagaur Fort) where she was working on wall paintings with
inlaid-mirror/glass decorations for a month before taking up the
Fellowship at the British Museum (Conservation project of the
