Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe CBE

Sir Barry Cunliffe is currently Professor of European Archaeology at the University of Oxford. His particular research interests focus on the later prehistoric and Roman period with an emphasis on networks of communication and maritime interaction. He has written a number of general books on the subject including Facing the Ocean, Prehistoric Europe, The Ancient Celts, The Extraordinary Voyage of Pytheas the Greek as well as textbooks such as Iron Age Communities in Britain and monographs on his excavations in Britain, France and Spain.

Sir Barry has played an active role in archaeology in Britain serving as President of the Society of Antiquaries and President of the Council of British Archaeology. He is currently a Commissioner of English Heritage and a Trustee director of the Mary Rose Trust. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and has been awarded the Gold Medal of the Society of Antiquaries.
