Maiolica (Scope note)

The word a medieval Italian form of the island Majorca. Originally used to describe Hispano-Moresque imports, and other lustrewares, which were sometimes shipped through Majorca. Later its meaning has broadened to 'tin-glazed earthenware', particularly that in the style of the Italian Renaissance. See also Majolica, a nineteenth-century term used to describe brightly-coloured relief-moulded lead-glazed earthenware.
