What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

calcite (Scope note)

This term is taken to include the banded variety of stone alternatively known as 'Egyptian alabaster' or 'calcite-alabaster', a crystalline form of calcium carbonate. The suggestion by some authorities to use the term 'travertine' for Egyptian alabaster (ie. calcite) is not generally accepted. 'Spar' is an archaic term referring to a well-formed, generally transparent or translucent crystal referring to either feldspar, fluorspar, or dog-tooth spar (ie. calcite).
