The Stoke-on-Trent Painter (Biographical details)

The Stoke-on-Trent Painter (painter/draughtsman; Greek; 340BC - 320BC; fl.)

Also known as

Stoke-on-Trent Painter

Apulian red-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Trendall called him the Stoke-on-Trent Painter naming him after a plate decorated with a female head on a plate in Stoke-on-Trent. Close to the Baltimore Painter (q.v.), he painted many of the female heads that appear in subsidiary positions on a variety of different vessels. An extremely large number of vases have been attributed to his hand on the basis of style.
