Manikkavachakar (Biographical details)

Manikkavachakar (saint/martyr; Indian; Male)

Also known as

Probably born in the Pandya country of southern Tamil Nadu in the late 9th century, Manikkavachakar, is one of the most renowned of the Tamil Saiva saints. He did, however, live later than the canonical group of sixty-three Saiva saints, the nayanmar. The chief of them - Appar, Sunderar and Sambandar - are often grouped, along with Manikkavacakar, in a set of high status. Like these three, he sang the praises of Siva and his hymns to the god are gathered together in the Tiruvacakam, the Eighth book of the Tamil Saiva canon.
