Biography

Research suggests this is likely to be Samuel Stephen Bateson, Barrister and son of Sir Robert Bateson (1782-1863), Irish Baronet and MP for County Londonderry (1830-32), and Catherine Dickson. Samuel married Hon. Florinda Handcock, daughter of Richard Handcock, 3rd Baron, in 1854. He was the subject of photographer Camille Silvy's work in 1861, the photograph of which can be seen in the National Portrait Gallery. He sold British and West African objects to the British Museum in 1874.
