- Biography
- Bookseller; son of John Newbery (1713-67), founder of the family business. Traded with his half-brother Thomas Carnan (q.v.), as Carnan and Newbery 1767-1782; alone 1779-1818. Married Mary Raikes, sister of Robert Raikes, the promoter of Sunday Schools (q.v.). After 1780 specialised in selling patent medicines from which he grew wealthy. Purchased Heathfield House, Sussex 1795; his widow Elizabeth (q.v.; presumably his second wife) continued to trade after his death.
Six trade cards (newspaper clippings) in Heal Collection (Heal,83.10.a-f), Four mounted on one sheet, two on another. Five advertise tinctures "For the Teeth, Scurvy in the Gums and Tooth-Ach [sic]" which are "Sold by the Patentee, Thomas Greenough, Apothecary...and by F. Newbery Junior, (only Son and Successor of the late Mr. John Newbery)." One, placed in the 'London Chronicle' 21-23 April, 1768, advertises lozenges "For Disorders of the Stomach and Bowels...Sold only by Newbery and Carnan, at the Bible and Sun, No.65, the North side of St. Paul's Churchyard; and by Mr. Bayley, Perfumer, in Cockspur Street, the Bottom of the Haymarket..."
Trade card (pamphlet) in Heal Collection (Heal,83.17) advertises "Dr. James's Powder for Fevers And all Inflammatory Disorders. Published by Virtue of His Majesty's Royal Letters Patent. A Very few Doses of this Powder, if taken according to the following Directions, will remove any Continual Acute Fever in a few Hours... [followed by four pages of] Particular Directions for using the Powder... no Powder is genuine unless the Directions are signed in Writing by Dr. James himself. These Powders are Sold Wholesale and Retail, by Francis Newbery, Junior, (only Son of the late Mr. John Newbery, and his Successor in the sole Right of vending and disposing of the same) at his Father's late House, No.65, the Bible and Sun, on the North Side of St. Paul's Church Yard, near the Chapter House..."
Bill-head in Heal Collection (Heal,83.23) states "Bought of Francis Newbery, The Only Warehouse for Dr. James's Powder..." The bill is dated "London Nov. 14, 1800."
