What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

Formerly called the Jii-chii-san (‘G. T. Sun = Graphic Times Sun’) Shōkai Studio, run by the father of photographer Yamahata Yosuke (q.v.) in Singapore. Renamed by Yamahata during the Pacific War (1941-45). From 1940 Yamahata was an official navy photographer and in August 1945 he photographed the immediate aftermath of the Nagasaki atomic bombing.
