What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

On home leave from China in 1874 Stephen Wootton Bushell (q.v.) married Florence Jane Mathews. The couple returned to China (apart from periods of home leave) until he retired in 1898. She donated from his collection to the British Museum in 1909.
