Painter, born in Hungary, worked as a cook and barber before studying painting in Vienna between 1823 an 1832. Travelled to Paris and Italy in 1837, before travelling to London in 1838. Exhibited at the R.A. and British Institution from 1838 onwards. Became known for his portraiture, and later addressed literary scenes and mythological motifs. Elected a member of the New Watercolour Society in 1854.
