- Biography
- Son of Henry Reveley Mitford; civil servant, worked for the Foreign Office and the Office of Works; served in St Petersburg, Peking and Japan 1866-73; in 1906 accompanied Prince Arthur of Connaught (q.v.) to Japan. Trustee of the National Gallery, London; MP for Stratford-on-Avon, 1892-5. In 1874 married Lady Clementina Gertrude Helen Ogilvy (d. 1932). In 1886 assumed the surname Freeman-Mitford upon inheriting the estates of John Freeman-Mitford; cousin of Algernon Charles Swinburne (q.v.).
