Biography

The National Heritage Memorial Fund was set up by parliament in 1980. It gives grants to protect items of outstanding importance to the nation’s heritage, acting as a ‘fund of last resort’. These grants are made in memory of those people who have given their lives for the United Kingdom.

In 1993, the trustees of the National Heritage Memorial Fund also became responsible for making National Lottery grants for the heritage, and a separate fund known as the Heritage Lottery Fund was set up (q.v.). N.B. Funding for BM acquisitions from 1995 onwards is likely to have come from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
