Oettingen-Wallerstein (Biographical details)

Oettingen-Wallerstein (German)

Also known as

Aristocratic family from an area in in modern-day eastern Baden-Württemberg and western Bavaria. A large collection of contemporary prints was formed in the late XVIIIc by Kraft Ernst, Count of Oettingen-Wallerstein (1748-1802). Many dealers' accounts remain in the family archive (see Christoph Frank in 'Giovanni Volpato: les loges de Raphael', Tours 2007, p.67 and footnotes). Much of the collection was dispersed in sales in 1997-8 in London and on the Continent. The prints relating to the French Revolution can be recognised from the fresh colouring and the fact that they have been folded into four.
