Painter, draughtsman and etcher; active in Haarlem. Full name Adriaen Jansz. van Ostade. Specialised in genre scenes. Brother of Isaak (q.v.). Trained by Frans Hals (q.v.); his pupils include Cornelis Dusart (who inherited the contents of his master's studio and often worked over the latter's drawings), Jan Steen and Cornelis Bega (qq.vv.). Married to Machteltje Pietersdochter in 1638 who dies in 1642. Remarried in 1657 to Anna Ingels. 1662 dean of St Luke Guild in Haarlem. Complete oeuvre of prints at the British Museum.
