Curator's comments
For the history of this composition, see Catherine Monbeig Goguel in 'Salviati et la bella maniera', Rome 2001, pp.24-39. This particular print was not known to her, and has been published for the first time by James Grantham Turner in 'Print Quarterly' XXIV 2007, pp.284-6. He knows one other impression of the print, now in a private collection in Stockholm together with the original Salviati drawing, which has a similar inscription in pen.
The three plates measure (left to right) 445 x 552; 448 x 542; and 444 x 548mm. The right hand one bears the initials CFL, which may be of the engraver, but do not serve to identify him. The print is published by Linda Wolk-Simon as 'Master CLF' but she provides no argument for who this engraver might be. See 'Art and love in Renaissance Italy', Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2008, p.209.

Acquisition date
2002

Acquisition notes
The print was found in poor condition in 2002 rolled in the cupboard in P&E containing the Witt collection, and transferred to P&D. It had no register number and there is no evidence for its provenance and no reason to think that it came from George Witt (AVG)
