Description
Satire on Oliver Cromwell and the Protectorate suggesting that he aimed to become king: on the left, the full-length figure of Cromwell in armour, wearing a crown and ermine cloak and holding the sword of justice and orb of sovereignty; behind is the scene of the beheading of Charles I at Whitehall and above a mock coat-of-arms with a dog wearing a mitre and holding a sword in his mouth, supported by two devils; on the right, the blindfolded figure of Justice holding a sword and scales in which the head of Charles I outweighs the orb of sovereignty; beneath her feet are two prostrate figures, one wearing heavy gloves and a fur cape from whose face falls a mask, the other clutches a large spiked club, and above two figures sit in clouds supporting a book surmounted by a crown, one holds a martyr's palm, the other represents Time with his hour-glass and scythe. There are six scenes between the figures and four beneath them showing satirical representations of Cromwell's coronation, his meeting with the Privy Council and subsequent celebrations which include a banquet and people drinking from barrels in the street. c.1653.
