Melanesia project
Project Launch
The project was launched on 20 September 2005 with a
one-day workshop which brought together researchers working in the
Pacific Islands to discuss issues relating to the research of
museum collections.
Papers were presented by Melanesia Project research staff and
researchers from Cambridge University, the University of East
Anglia, the British Museum and Goldsmiths College. Participants and
session chairs came from the University of Bergen, the University
of Manchester and the Pitt-Rivers Museum.
The three sessions, titled “Documenting the present”,
“Documenting Knowledge”, and “Interpreting the archives” were
pertinent to the aims and objectives of the project, in that they
addressed methodological issues relating to the research of museum
collections in the field.
The seminar was highly successful attracting 45 delegates
representing both academic, museological and non-research
audiences.
