Excavation in Egypt at Tell el-Balamun
The Roman Street
The Roman street, discovered in 2003, runs across the site from
north-east to south west along the axis of the earlier processional
route to the main temple of Amun from the north-east gate of the
Twenty-sixth dynasty enclosure, although the street continues also
outside the enclosure towards the NE side of the site. Two levels
of pavement were detected, dated to the second and fourth centuries
AD.
A description of the main features of the street has been
published in the paper, "Main Street, Diospolis Inferior", by
Jeffrey Spencer, in N. Crummy (ed.), Image, Craft and the Classical
World. Essays in honour of Donald Bailey and Catherine Johns
(Monogr. Instrumentum 29), Montagnac 2005, p. 233-241. This
account, however, covers only the north-eastern sector of the
street lying above the entrance of the 26th dynasty enclosure wall,
together with details of an adjacent Roman building. More
information, including a description of other portions of the
street, is accessible through the link below.
