What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Sir Aurel Stein (1862-1943) is renowned for his archaeological exploration in Central Asia, China and India. He spent most of his career associated with British or Indian institutions, and his extensive collections and publications revolutionised oriental studies in the twentieth century.

Stein was Hungarian by birth. Throughout his life he maintained strong links with the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and made regular donations, including his personal library, working papers and photographs.

A very successful international project 1999-2002 between the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the British Museum and the British Library resulted in the publication of Catalogue of the Collections of Sir Aurel Stein in the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2002). More materials came to light, and the international team was reformed in 2005 for a two-year project to complete the cataloguing of the Stein collection in the Library.

This project has been completed. The catalogue was published in 2007.
