Description:
Sir Aurel Stein (1862-1943) is renowned for
his archaeological exploration in Central Asia, China and India. He
spent most of his career associated with British or Indian
institutions, and his extensive collections and publications
revolutionised oriental studies in the twentieth century.
Stein was Hungarian by birth. Throughout his
life he maintained strong links with the Library of the Hungarian
Academy of Sciences, and made regular donations, including his
personal library, working papers and photographs.
A very successful international project
1999-2002 between the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences,
the British Museum and the British Library resulted in the
publication of Catalogue of the Collections of Sir Aurel Stein
in the Library of the HungarianAcademyof

Since then, more materials have come to light,
and the international team was reformed in 2005 for a two-year
project to complete the cataloguing of the Stein collection in the
Library.
