What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Naukratis has been the topic of scholarly studies ever since its rediscovery 130 years ago (and even before). Here is a list of the main excavation reports and of some of the most important subsequent studies, as well as the publications of the Naukratis project so far.

The first phase of the British Museum Online research catalogue Naukratis: Greeks in Egypt is now online, containing several thousand objects excavated at the site. Once completed, the catalogue will include all 17,000 finds from the site alongside analytical essays.
