Holding it all together - conference on ancient and modern
joining, repair and consolidation
The British Museum two-day conference entitled “Holding it
all together; ancient and modern approaches to joining, repair and
consolidation” took place on 21 and 22 February 2008.
The conference brought together conservators, scientists and
curators with an interest in the methods by which artefacts have
been manufactured, repaired (both in antiquity and modern times)
and conserved by joining together a series of components, using
such techniques as adhering, casting, soldering
and luting.
The programme was broad, covering most
materials. It included ancient and ethnographic examples of
manufacture, repair and reuse of multi-component
artefacts, methods for recognising and making potential joins,
modern conservation and repair methods and materials, and methods
of display, including the ethics of revealing/concealing joins and
repairs
Sessions included discussions of joins and repairs in organics,
glass, ceramics and metals, and of ancient and modern
adhesives.
