Bibliography

Most of the citations found in the text use the Harvard system of name(s) and a date (e.g. Walters 1900; Myres and Ohnefalsch-Richter 1899, etc) which are listed in alphabetic and chronological order in the following list of books and articles. Electronic publications are cited in a similar manner, with the URL normally provided in the main bibliographic list.

Special cases

In a few cases, this system has been superseded to take account of the nature of the publication (such as recurring annual reports of discoveries) or for original archival sources.

  • Individual short chapters in multiple-authored guide books (such as Swiny 1982 and Harmanta and Stylianou 1969) are generally cited by the name of the author and page numbers (e.g. Benson in Swiny 1982, 38–45) to avoid unnecessary citation.
  • Annual reports of archaeological discoveries published in the journal Bulletin de Correspondence hellénique, the Chronique des Fouilles, are cited as Chronique with the standard abbreviated form of the journal, volume number, and year, in addition to the page number (e.g. Chronique BCH 100 (1976)). References to preliminary reports of excavations published in the Report of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus (RDAC) or the Annual Report of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus (ARDA) are treated similarly.
  • Archival material held by the British Museum is usually cited by institution (BM) and then the individual department (Central Archives, GR, ME) followed by the name of the volume (Original Papers, Original Letters, etc) and the date and/or number of the relevant document. Abbreviations are explained below. Archival Material relating to Cyprus in the British Museum is summarised in Tatton-Brown 2001b. Archival material from outside the BM is usually cited in full. The reader is directed to the specific institutions for more information on these sources.

Accessing research materials

Many of the books and articles cited in this catalogue are highly specialist in nature and may be difficult to find in smaller public libraries. Some however can be found in larger civic or museum libraries open to the public, while university collections and other research institutions specialising in archaeology are also good sources of material on ancient Cyprus.

The COPAC website lists the holdings of many research libraries in the United Kingdom and Ireland as well as proving information on the institutions themselves. Many of the journals cited in this catalogue can be found on the JSTOR website. This can be accessed via some (but not all) public libraries, and most university libraries, but not as yet from private computers without an institutional log-in such as the Athens system. The Persée website provides free access to numerous French-language periodicals: this includes the Bulletin de Correspondence Héllenique (BCH) which is indispensible for the study of Cypriot archaeology because of the annual reports of archaeological discoveries on Cyprus (Chronique des Fouilles) from 1959 down to 2002. New discoveries since 2003 are now summarized in Chronique des Fouilles en ligneArchaeology in Greece online jointly published by the École française d’Athènes and the British School at Athens [http://chronique.efa.gr/].

Some of the older books and journals in this bibliography are very difficult to find even in research libraries, and even then they may be on restricted access because of their age or state of preservation. Some however have been digitised and can be read on-line, often for free, though Google Books, Internet Archive or other digitisation projects. The University of Heidelberg Archaeological Literature- digitized website provides free access to its extensive database of digitized archaeological books, including Excavations in Cyprus and Walters' catalogue of Cypriot vases in the British Museum.

A number of these important texts can also be accessed via Derek Counts' website Styppax. An academic resource for the study of Cypriote sculpture. This is also an excellent source of information on Cypriot sculpture and related subjects, as well as additional bibliographic references, relevant websites and other study aids.
