What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

Gold sword guard-plate, the lowermost of the upper pair of guard-plates; acting as a 'tray' for guard-plate 1939,1010.20, to which it is attached by three rivets. This guard-plate consists of an elongated oval of plain gold with an upturned rim and a central slot for the sword tang, encircled by filigree rope underneath. Gold clip from the upper end of the sword-grip. The clip has a straight back and curved sides, and is decorated with filigree S-scrolls. Three gold rivets secure it to the sword-grip. One of two such clips, with 1939,1010.24. a. Gold sword-pommel of cocked-hat form, comprising five curved panels decorated with cloisonné garnet work, including quatrefoil and step-cut cells. Each panel is divided by lines of very thick beaded wire. On either side of the pommel are two rivets, each with beaded wire collars, which attach the pommel to the guard plates 1939,1010.21-22. The pommel itself sits on a long oval base-plate.
