What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Treatment proposal

    Lift secondary material. Flatten turn-overs and repair as necessary. Coins and Medals to provide acid-free card supports.

    Condition

    Small turnovers around edges. Moderate surface dirt in margins. Creases and folds making substrate weak, losses of top layer due to abrasion of apex of creases.

    Treatment details

    Surface cleaned with grated Staedtler Plastic Eraser around margins and on verso. Moistened turnovers with damp cotton wool swab and weighted flat. Tears and creases repaired or strengthened with Japanese paper and wheat starch paste adhesive (gluten-free). Infilled major losses in margins with toned Japanese paper, adherred with wheat starch paste (gluten-free) and further toned in with pastels.
