What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Iron lamp, comprising a hemispherical iron bowl supported by a framework consisting of three vertical struts extending from a collar at the base of the bowl. Below this collar are three widely-splayed, curved legs with slightly flattened feet. The lamp is very corroded.

    Treatment proposal

    Clean to remove surface dirt and dust.

    Condition

    The object is in good condition overall. There is surface dirt and dust present. There is one loose area where a previous repair has failed.

    Treatment details

    The dirt and dust was removed using a soft sable hair brush. The loose area was readhered using HMG heatproof and waterproof adhesive (cellulose nitrate).
