A valuable record of the second time the actor Ichikawa Danjuro II performed the new role of the swashbuckling
dandy Sukeroku to great acclaim at the Nakamura theatre in the New Year 1716. The story was combined, by convention,
with that of the Soga brothers. (Label copy, TTC, 1998)

The Kabuki scene 'Sukeroku' was acted at the Nakamura-za theatre in the first month of 1716. The second-generation Danjuro achieved such fame in this heroic role that it became the symbol of his family's skill. In this scene he stands outside a tea-house in the Yoshiwara, the brothel quarter of Edo (Tokyo), watched by two courtesans. This is one of a series by Kiyomasu, which shares the title cartouche in the top right corner. The print is signed Torii Kiyomasu.
