This work illustrates "Kanjin-cho," the fifth book of 'The Tale of the Heike'. It adheres fairly faithfully to the text, the artist capturing the dynamic scene with admirable skill. However, subtle differences between this work and that shown in color plate 92, both in the modeling of the forms and the quality of the line, have led some to suggest that this work may be by an able pupil of Matabei's, and the authorship is in fact not clear. It is obvious from extant works that Matabei and his studio turned out a considerable number of such paintings based on well-known tales of old and centering on human figures. However, even admitting the possibility of a pupil's hand here, the work is still one of the most outstanding among them.
