The netsuke is lightly dirty with ingrained dirt in the carving. They have also been coated with wax (not analysed) which has allowed dirt to become stuck to the surface. Some of the netsuke has had a re sealing wax material applied to the base in order to help them stand up during some previous display.

    Treatment details

The netsuke were cleaned with silk wrapped swabs and white spirit. Further cleaning was undertaken using white spirit applied with a brush to get wax and debris from the recesses of the carving. Groom stick was also used in some areas to remove larger particles of dirt and cotton wool fibres from previous cleaning.
