What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

This blade is 'shinogi zukuri' of standard proportions and of deep curvature. The unmodified tang has one hole and the file marks are 'sujigai'. The tang tip is 'kengyo'. The grain is closely packed 'itame' with 'masame' on the 'shinogi ji' and with some 'muneyaki'. The 'hamon' is deep and luxuriant 'choji' in 'nioi' with many 'ashi' and 'yo'. The 'boshi' is 'komaru' with a deep return.

The mounting forms a 'daisho' with that for the 'wakizashi' by Ikkanshi Tadatsuna (no. 44). The scabbard is of gold 'mura nashiji' patches in black lacquer, and the hilt is bound with 'whale's beard'. The silver fittings have scenes of a farmer tilling the soil, and his wife at home in their hut, sculpted in high-relief coloured metal inlay. The 'fuchi' is signed 'Gyokusai', a Meiji-era art-name, which is here spuriously inscribed as dating to the second year of the Ansei era (1854-60), in accordance with 1855. The mounting lacks a 'tsuba'.
