What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    This blade is 'shinogi zukuri' with a medium 'kissaki'. It has been shortened so that the character 'nori' has been cut away from the inscription. The sword was originally at least 80 cm in cutting length, and 'bohi' on both sides of the blade were carved after the blade was shortened. The tang has two holes and the file markings are 'sujigai' on the original part of the tang, and 'kiri' on the portion of the tang that originally formed part of the cutting edge. The tang tip is 'kiri'. The grain is an ordered, rather prominent 'itame'. The 'hamon' is 'suguha' in 'nie' with a hint of 'notare' with 'gunome' and 'ashi'. The 'boshi' is a pointed 'komaru' with 'haki'.

    Masanori I was originally from Tango Province, but worked in Kyoto and later moved to Echizen. Masanori II worked in Fukui in Echizen Province and also in Edo during the Kambun era (1661-73).

    The blade has been mounted as a 'tachi'. The gold 'makie'-lacquered scabbard has longitudinal panels along the sides containing family 'mon' of triple folding fans in 'makie'. The metal fittings are polished and patinated iron with applied gold 'mon'. The 'tsuba' is a hollyhock 'mokko' type with a 'nanako' surface, with the same family 'mon' engraved on the 'o-seppa'. Although this is not a formal 'tachi' style, it is of fine quality and was most probably made to the taste of a feudal lord or other high-ranking person.
