- Description

A lead alloy, hollow-cast pilgrim souvenir from the shrine of St Thomas Becket at Canterbury. It is in the form of a chasse-shaped ampulla, gabled with angular suspensory handles between the neck and the roof ridge and decorated with bands of alternately hatched and striped triangles. The flat sides bear scenes pertaining to Becket and his cult, consisting of a king between two bishops and Becket's martyrdom. One end depicts Becket making a gesture of blessing in episcopal garb, and the other shows his martyrdom. Important figures have over-large heads. This piece is associated with the shrine of St Thomas Becket at Canterbury.
