The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
The round temple also appears in other studies, at the edge of Tivoli's waterfall. It was dedicated to the sybil Albunea; the rectangular temple to its right belonged to Tiburnus, the legendary founder of Tivoli. Towne has applied so much later colouring, especially in the moody sky and heavy shadow cast over the left foreground, that he dated the work 1789 on the front (though he retained a date of 1781 on the mount inscription). Towne's 1793 Royal Academy exhibit was a view of the Sybil's Temple and, though now lost, was doubtless based on this watercolour.
