The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
This watercolour shows the church of S Agnese fuori della Mura on the Via Nomentana, north of Rome, in whose grounds stood ruins then identified as a temple of Bacchus. Here the church tower is visible in the distance at the right edge of the view. The time that Towne noted on the back of the mount - 'from 10 O Clock till 2' - is probably longer than it took to make the sketch. Perhaps some of Towne's time inscriptions are less about fixing his sketches in a specific moment of time than recording that day's timetable and the duration of his visit to the site. Both this and the folowing watercolour (Nn,2.8) were probably exhibits 140 and 141, both titled 'Temple of Bacchus in the middle distance'.
