    Not in Binyon.

This appears to be a fragment of a large watercolour; Towne frequently worked on several pieces of paper which he later joined together. The ruined arch in the foreground suggests that he may have been painting a view near Rome.

The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
This fragment was found in the albums in which Towne's drawings were stored for a century and a half after their donation. An old note on the back states that it was 'inserted in Page 19'. It depicts part of the Claudian Aqueduct (bottom left) and, above it, the brow of the Esquiline Hill. It was conceived as the right-hand continuation of View of the Colosseum from the Palatine Hill. While eventually not used, it underlines the extent to which Towne's later creative decisions have shaped the appearance of his watercolours.
