- Curator's comments
- In 1958 Robert Wylie Lloyd bequeathed 50 watercolours by Turner in addtion to 76 British watercolours, 51 examples of Chinese lacquerware and 202 Japanese swords to the British Museum. This was one of the most important Bequests in the recent history of the Museum: a valuable collection, which included eighteen watercolours by John ‘Warwick’ Smith. The previous provenance of these watercolours is not always known: six of them (1958,0712.370; 1958,0712.371; 1958,0712.373; 1958,0712.374; 1958,0712.375; 1958,0712.376) were acquired by Lloyd from Lady Gunning, a descendant of the Earl of Warwick and two were sold in an anonymous sale at Sotheby’s in 1937 (1958,0712.368; 1958,0712.369). These two are Alpine views, dated 1802, while the other watercolours represent Wales and England.
For a general discussion about the Alpine views, see 1871,1111.3 and 1958,0712.369.
