Binyon catalogues this drawing under anonymous; it was then attributed to George Moutard Woodward, but in 1997 was identified by Simon Turner as the work of Frederick George Byron, as the two figures appear in his long print 'Meeting an Old Friend with a New Face' published by William Holland in 1788 (reproduced in Diana Donald, 'The Age of Caricature', p. 96, fig. 106, coll. Lewis Walpole Library, Yale).
