The style indicates an early date, perhaps as early as 1849, as Virginia Surtees suggests. She pointed out the resemblance between this head and one reproduced by Marillier (p. 34) and described as a fragment, then in the possession of W.M. Rossetti, of the original unfinished large-scale painting ''Hist!' said Kate the Queen' (a subject taken from a song in Browning's poem 'Pippa Passes'), begun in 1849 and later destroyed. The composition is known in its complete form from a smaller version, dated 1851, belonging to Eton College (S 49; Tate Exh., 1984, no. 31). The drawing is not a study for the head in the fragment, which must be that of the attendant standing immediately to the left of the queen, but could well be from the same model.
