  • Curator's comments

Catalogue entry from J.Kierkuc-Bielinski, 'George Scharf', exh. Soane Museum, 2009 (no. 23):
The outlandish costumes worn by the figures in this sketch were one way through which people’s attention was caught by advertisers. In particular the man wearing a strange green bonnet, advertising an anatomical model, stands out from the group. The figures hold placards advertising various attractions, such as a display of giraffes at the Surrey Zoological Gardens.
