- Curator's comments
- This drawing and the one purchased with it, 'Roman Amusement' (1994-5-14-9), are closely related to a pair of watercolours, 'Evening Amusement at Rome' and 'Evening Amusement at Naples', now in the Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum, Kelvingrove, dated 1769 and 1770 respectively. The watercolour version of 'Neapolitan Amusement' depicts the rock arch from a slightly greater distance, showing Sir William Hamilton's Villa Emma, built on the top of the rock forming the arch.
See the exhibition catalogue, Vases and Volcanoes (I Jenkins and K Sloan) BM 1996 for further information about Hamilton and Allan and the resulting watercolours.
